4. Rene Matić Wins the 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize
In a historic moment for contemporary British art, London-based multidisciplinary artist Rene Matić was officially crowned the winner of the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2026. The highly anticipated announcement was made during an elegant evening ceremony on May 14 at The Photographers' Gallery in London, drawing a massive gathering of international curators, critics, and artists. Born in Peterborough in 1997, the 29-year-old Matić makes history as the youngest-ever recipient of the celebrated £30,000 cash award, cementing their position as one of the most vital, urgent voices working in visual art today.
Matić secured Europe's top photography honor for their critically acclaimed solo exhibition, "AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH" which originally debuted at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) Berlin. The body of work is a masterclass in diaristic, intimate storytelling, utilizing snapshot-style photography that effortlessly strips away the traditional, sterile boundaries of fine art portraiture. Matić's imagery offers a deeply personal, unvarnished exploration of identity, belonging, subculture, and family narratives, placing them directly against the broader socio-political realities of modern life.
The exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery, which showcased the work of Matić alongside the other three exceptionally talented shortlisted finalists—Jane Evelyn Atwood, Weronika Gęsicka, and Amak Mahmoodian—remained open to the public until June 7. Following its highly successful London run, the entire multimedia installation—which thoughtfully incorporates found objects, archival soundscapes, and sculptural configurations alongside traditional glass-mounted photographic prints—will travel internationally to the Deutsche Börse headquarters in Eschborn, Germany, later this autumn.
